REGULATIONS OF THE ACADEMIC ADVISOR INSTITUTION

Article 1. Purpose and Scope of Application
The Academic Advisors of Studies are members of the faculty of the department who advise and support, through scheduled meetings, primarily first-year students, aiming to facilitate their integration into higher education. They inform, provide information, and counsel all students regarding their studies and subsequent career paths, and they offer special supportive care to students facing serious family, personal, or other difficulties that hinder the successful completion of their studies.

The faculty members, staff, and administrative personnel, the directors of the laboratories, and the chair of the department, as well as the relevant services of the institution, collaborate and support the Academic Advisors of Studies in their work, taking into account information, observations, suggestions, and requests regarding any deficiencies, malfunctions that create problems for students, and any proposals for their resolution.

Article 2. Allocation of Students to Academic Advisors
Undergraduate Programs of Study (UPS)
At the beginning of the academic year, the Department Council appoints two Academic Advisors of Studies from the History sector and two from the Archaeology and History of Art sector. The names and contact details of the Academic Advisors are listed in the annual Study Guide and on the department’s website.

Postgraduate Programs of Study (PPS) and Interdepartmental/Interinstitutional PPS
The Academic Advisors for students are assigned by the supervisors of the students, that is, the faculty members of the department or (in the case of interdepartmental PPS) from collaborating departments, who teach in the program and oversee the students admitted to the program each year.

An Academic Advisor of Studies for each student is appointed by the Coordinating Committee of the PPS or the Program of Study Committee of the interdepartmental PPS. The specific scientific interests of the student, as derived from their curriculum vitae and the interview accompanying the entrance examination for the program, are taken into account for the appointment of the Academic Advisor.

Article 3. Duties of Academic Advisors
The Academic Advisor of Studies intervenes in the following areas:

  • Provides support from the first moment of students’ admission to the program regarding the organization of their studies and the selection of courses, as well as during the preparation of assignments, including the Master’s Thesis.
  • Informs about the general functioning of the Department’s Program of Study, the organization of the Study Guide, the available resources, the laboratory facilities, and the opportunities for student participation in laboratory activities as well as in research programs being conducted in the Department.
  • Informs about the services offered by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens to its students for supporting their studies.
  • Provides support for identifying the best combinations of courses within the offered Program of Study, so that students can choose the appropriate courses according to their personal interests, skills, and capabilities.
  • Monitors the academic progress of students during the advising period, aiming for the smooth completion of the program of study. Provides support to students regarding potential problems arising from either insufficient monitoring or the results of evaluations in specific courses, which may constitute obstacles to their smooth progression through their studies.
  • Provides support for shaping the individual study plan of students regarding both the continuation of their studies at the next level and their professional development, based on their interests, and informs them about the available postgraduate programs in the Department as well as the professional opportunities they may have as graduates of the specific Department.

Article 4. Maintenance, Completion, and Revision of the Current Regulation
