Olga Katsiardi-Hering, Anastasia Papadia-Lala, Katerina Nikolaou, Vangelis Karamanolakis (eds.), Hellene, Romios, Greek: Collective Identifications and Identities, Historimata,7, Athens: Evrasia, 2018, p. 686.

The edited vol., with 41 papers, is a critical contribution to the discussion about the names "Hellene, Romios (Romaios), Greek", their etymological and in particular their historical origin and evolution, the arguments about the collective identification in the long period. Recent research and theories enriched our knowledge, refined our historical approach, conduced to new critical contributions, widening our reflections concerning the historical routes of concepts, meanings and collective representations and identifications, such as nation, έθνος, nationality, εθνότητα, εθνικότητα, nationalism, εθνικισμός, identities, belonging etc. Scholars from Greece and abroad try to cover a large aspect of various 'schools' or trends on a calm more or less and thoughtful approach. It's a multilateral contribution from an aspect of historical, anthropological, social aspect, based on rich historical sources, from the antiquity until the 19th cent. and the formation of the first Greek Nation-State, covering areas under the ancient 'city-state', the Hellenistic period, the Byzantine, Ottoman Empires, the Venetian presence in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Diaspora, the Greek Revolution and the first years of the new Greek Nation-State.

Tribute to Olga Katsiardi-Hering, Histories vol. 8, Department of History and Archaeology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Eurasia Publications, Athens 2022.

**FORTY-ONE STUDIES**, organized into seven thematic sections, which form a comprehensive study of the history of the New Hellenism, primarily from the 15th century to the establishment of the Greek state, as well as the entire long 19th century.

  1. Greeks, Venetians, Ottomans, Christians, and Muslims (13th-19th centuries): Institutions, coexistence, material culture, uprisings, and Revolution
  2. Russia, the Mediterranean, Orthodoxy, the Greeks
  3. The Greek world in its international dimension (16th-19th centuries): Diaspora, economy, ideas
  4. Spiritual orientations and education: Ottoman Empire, Greece, Southeastern Europe
  5. Space and its History: Formation, functions, allegories, cartography
  6. At the roots of societies: Gender, love, poverty, philanthropy
  7. Interpreting societies and their History: Representations, receptions, ideas

The volume focuses on the Greek world of the period, highlighting the polysemy of the terms that define it, the multiple identities, and its distinct characteristics, in its long-standing, organic connection with the Ottoman Empire, Venice, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the rest of Europe. The volume is dedicated to Olga Katsiardi-Hering, emeritus professor of the Department of History and Archaeology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, for her internationally recognized research work, her fruitful teaching, and her overall contribution to the History of New Hellenism.

Costas Gaganakis, Nikoletta Giantsi-Meletiadi, Maria Dourou-Heliopoulou, Maria Papathanassiou, Kostas Raptis (eds.), European cities in crisis. From the Middle Ages to the Present, Historimata, v. 9, Department of History and Archaeology, NKUA, Herodotos, Athens 2022. 586 pages.

The authors of this volume examine aspects of the history of various European cities, in all kinds of crises, over a period of about nine centuries, from the Middle Ages to the modern period. Τhey were “… cities in France and the Italian peninsula (for the most part), urban centres in the Low Countries, in Britain, Spain, Austria (Old and New), urban centres in the Greek Venetian East and the Greek state, are all covered colourfully inside. They are cities and towns plagued by political, institutional and religious strife, by uprisings, revolutions, world wars, epidemics, famines, large and sudden population movements as well as inadequate technical infrastructures. They are urban centres in crisis. The studies in this volume constitute […] an important step towards highlighting ‘crisis’ as a useful analytical category for urban history research.” («Introduction», p. 55).
